PS5 Troubleshooting

These are the most common reported issues when setting Zen up on a PlayStation 5.

Cronus users who skipped the instructions are finding that the PlayStation 5 has some pretty great stealth security, because they are likely trying to set it up the same as the other consoles and wondering why the controller is disconnecting or not working with any MODs. If your DualSense controller is connected to Zen's A1, with the Zen connected directly to PS5 with CONSOLE/PC(micro-USB) and PS4 Speciality is NOT enabled (or it's enabled without the PS5 Dongle or HORI Mini-Pad setup correctly) - for a few minutes it may seem like everything is working fine. You're able to navigate the PS5 dashboard and even perhaps able to load a game, so everything is tested and working, right? ⛔ WRONG ⛔ If you try to play any PS5 game with or without using GamePacks or scripts, the controller outputs may seem to work fine at first, but they will become scrambled after a few seconds/minutes and disconnect after 8-10 minutes.

PLAYSTATION 5 OWNERS: It's really important to understand that controller security is handled differently depending on if it's a PS4 or PS5 game, and also depending on if you are using a DualSense or DualShock 4 controller. To circumvent this security, there are two special workarounds for playing PS5 games: PS4 Speciality Mode and the new PS Remote Play.

If you do not correctly setup either of these PS5 connection methods, or ignore the instructions by connecting your Zen directly to a PS5, a controller connected to A1, and the emulator output set to AUTO (or manually set to PLAYSTATION 4/5), you can except the following failed results:

  • DualSense controller connected to A1 (with a GamePack or script loaded) will seem to work fine in the PS5 menu, but once you load a PS4 or PS5 game, the outputs will corrupt after a few seconds or minutes and will eventually disconnect.

  • DualSense controller connected to A1 (no GamePacks or scripts loaded) will seem to work fine after loading either PS4 or PS5 games, but it will fail the security handshake after 8-10 minutes and disconnect.

  • DualShock 4 controller connected to A1 (with a GamePack or script loaded) will seem to work fine in the PS5 menu, but once you load a PS4 game the outputs will corrupt after a few seconds or minutes and will eventually disconnect. The controller also may not work in any PS5 games at all. It may not even work with some PS4 games.

  • DualShock 4 controller connected to A1 (no GamePacks or scripts loaded) will seem to work fine after loading a PS4 game, but it will fail the security handshake after 8-10 minutes and disconnect. The controller may not work in any PS5 games at all. It may not even work in some PS4 games.

This is why there are special PS5 methods, specifically designed to bypass these security checks 🙂

If a PS5 game plays longer than 10 minutes while using any GamePack or script, CONGRATULATIONS because you have successfully setup your Cronus Zen to work with PlayStation 5. We're serious, that's it, you're good to go 🙂

Any disconnects after that point are your standard garden variety disconnections which happen with any controller.

When setting up a controller to play PS5 games on a PlayStation 5, you must decide if you need PS Remote Play or PS4 Speciality. It is then very important that you test in-game for longer than 10 minutes to verify if Zen's security handshake is working correctly.

Testing for less than 10 minutes isn't enough as the PS controller security check doesn't activate until after 8-10 minutes.

PS5 Controller Disconnects after 8-10 Minutes

Correct. This is what happens when you have connected Zen directly to your PS5, the DualSense controller to A1, and without correctly setting up PS4 Speciality Mode or PS Remote Play. Or perhaps you haven't used these methods at all?

It will seem like the controller is working for a few minutes, but it will disconnect, or any scripts or GamePacks you're using will become super laggy and unresponsive after a few seconds/minutes.

In a nutshell, you need to follow the correct instructions for PS4 Speciality Mode or PS Remote Play, both of which bypass this level of security when setup correctly.

PS4 Controller Not Working in PS5 Games

Correct. This is what happens when you have connected Zen directly to your PS5, the DualShock 4 controller to A1, and without correctly setting up PS4 Speciality or PS Remote Play and then trying to Play PS5 games. Or perhaps you haven't used these methods at all?

It will seem like the controller is working for a few minutes, but this direct to PS5 configuration with a DualShock 4 controller only works with PS4 games, and many of them will disconnect, or any scripts or GamePacks you're using will become super laggy and unresponsive after a few seconds/minutes.

In a nutshell, you need to follow the correct instructions for PS4 Speciality Mode or PS Remote Mode, both of which bypass this level of security when setup correctly.

PS Dongle Sold Out Everywhere

Unfortunately, we no longer manufacture the PS5 Dongle (required for PS4 Speciality ) as the IC components needed are no longer available. We bought every chip and made as many as we could, sorry!

Not to worry, the HORI PS4 Mini-Pad does the same job as the PS5 Dongle. No difference, only cheaper and available to buy right now 🛒

PS Remote Play Lag

If you experience lag with the official PS Remote Play app, try Chiaki PS Remote Play , a very popular PS Remote Play alternative that is fast and easy to setup. Many community members have also offered the following tips for lag free PS5 gaming:

  1. Your console and PS Remote device should both be on the same wired network.
  2. If you are using a modern USB-C mobile device, use a USB-C GIGABIT ethernet adapter.
  3. Upload speed should be at least 5Mbps - but the higher the better.
  4. Ping/Latency is super important. Anything below 20ms is good. Bad ping = 💀
  5. Try another device - PS Remote Play may not work well for you on a Mac, but Android Chiaki may be the ticket.
